Rheged Discovery Center- Fun for the Whole Family
Housed in the largest grass covered building resembling a hill in Britain is a popular visitor attraction. Known as Rheged, it is named after the Ancient kingdom of the Dark Ages. This all year, all weather discovery centre is a favorite of both locals and tourists. An international award winning attraction, it has a giant 3D cinema which offers tiered seating and high quality sound. There are also shops that include craft stores, bookstore and clothing shops.
These stores focus much on the culture and life in the area. Of course, dining is also a part of the entire package. Three different restaurants offer delicious Cumbrian cuisine made with the finest local ingredients.
Rheged Discovery Center also provides an indoor and outdoor play center for children. The soft play area is suitable for children under 46 in height with a separate area for kids under 5. Admission ranges from 1 per hour to 5 for unlimited playtime. On the other hand the outdoor play area admission is 1.50 for unlimited play.
The play areas are open from 10 am to 5:30 pm with the last admission at 4:30 pm. Pottery and painting are also available in the center. They are also open to hosting childrens parties and other special events.
More than this, Rheged is also home to the Lake Artists Society Winter Exhibition and other events. The exhibit features the participation of 30 Lake Artists Society members. A total of 150 original works will be displayed in this event. Pieces range in form from prints to postcards and even jigsaws. The exhibit is open from 11 am to 4 pm daily from December to January.
Admission is £1 while children below 16 may enter for free. A catalogue may also be bought for 2.The discovery center also has a conference area which may be used by groups for functions. Groups coming in may make arrangements ahead of time for better accommodation.
Rheged Discovery Center is open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. General admission is free. Parking is free and there is a special disabled parking space right next to the entrance. Visitors who want to come here can do so through private vehicles and public transport with the Penrith Station just a few kilometers away.
