Elterwater, meaning swan lake, is a small lake that lies half a mile (800 m) south-east of the village of the same name. Both are situated in the valley of Great Langdale in the Lake District in Cumbria, England.

Roughly a quarter of the houses in Elterwater are permanently occupied with the rest being holiday cottages. The river Brathay which provides the outflow from Elterwater flows south to join Lake Windermere, close to Ambleside.
