Birdoswald Roman Fort

Overlooking the River Irthing in Cumbria is one of the most well preserved forts within Hadrian’s Wall. Known as the Birdoswald Roman Fort, this historic site is a World Heritage Site as well as a popular tourist attraction. Strategically located, it offers a picturesque view of the gorge as well as the remains of what once stood there during the Roman occupation. A tea room can also be found within the visitor center. They serve homemade cakes, treats, sandwiches and light lunches which are sure to satisfy guests. Hot and cold drinks are also available in the cozy tea room. Visitors interested in staying over in this historic site may also do so. The 16th century farmhouse is now a 39 bed residential centre. It can accommodate both individual and group reservations. Those booking for large groups are advised to book ahead of time.

Visitors with special needs are easily accommodated in the visitor center. Disabled parking is available and the facility is equipped with disabled access to the toilets, tea room, shop and other parts of the site. Admission for adults costs £ 5 while children are charged £ 3. Concession tickets are sold at £4.50. English Heritage Members may enter free of charge. Parking is free; However, fees are refunded only upon admission. From April to September Birdoswald is open from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm from Monday to Sunday. During October it is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday to Sunday as well. It is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
